Understanding Deaf and Deafness: How to communicate with Deafness

Deaf is the word to identify a person with hearing loss. Deafness is the way of life of a Deaf person.

I always laugh whenever my mum and mother in-law converse with my wife who is a prelingually Deaf, they converse with her orally as they converse with persons without deafness, at such situation, just little or no knowledge/information is passed.

By prelingually Deaf, I mean, she became deaf early in childhood before acquiring language, she has just little knowledge of speaking, it would be difficult for such person to lip-read unlike me who is a postlingually Deaf meaning, I became deaf at adult age after the acquisition of language.

This unhealthy communication is witnessed between the Deaf and able counterparts on a daily basis and it changes little or nothing.

Communication is supreme in life. By communication knowledge and information is passed so, it must be clear and direct.

Lip-reading with the eyes can't be compared to listening with the ears, it's never an easy alternative so, when conversing with the Deaf, ensure clarity by writing, if at a go, speak and gesture thoroughly.

To encourage willingness from the Deaf to converse with you, manage your temper when you are requested to repeat the information by maintaining a friendly facial expression and not by sighing tiredness or reluctance.

There's possibility for the Deaf to get lost at a point because, the communication method being used is not tangible and recommendable and, most Deaf persons have a slow pace of understanding so, flexibility, patience and perseverance are required to get the Deaf well informed.

When conversing with a Deaf person, converse with the deafness by maintaining utmost flexibility to ensure your messages are well grabbed.

Add value to your value by carrying the Deaf along.

Be a good friend of the Deaf, COMMUNICATE and INSPIRE to kill depression and isolation among the Deaf.

It would be good to break the communication barrier by communicating in the language of the Deaf so, learning and communicating in Sign Language brings about quality communication with the Deaf.
