Defining Disability Series(Part 2)

Respecting the Status Quo towards Persons with Physical Disabilities

As the saying goes does; respect is reciprocal but the reciprocation towards people with physical disabilities suffers discrimination.

Manner of approach towards People with physical Disabilities, their rights to privacy, health care and etc is too awkward especially towards the Deaf.

Imagine a situation where two Deaf persons are having private conversation and people without physical disabilities gesturized to them that they are talking too much even asked to know what they have been discussing.

A Deaf woman among women without physical disabilities at a Ante-Natal Clinic who is not given the necessary attention by the healthcare personnel because they lack the knowledge of sign language and unavailability of sign language interpreter.

The funny part is when my right to decent dressing is being questioned, I have been at many occasions doubted to be Deaf because I dress decently and still have my speech intact, persons with physical disabilities are expected to look indecent because various has been met indecently dressed.

The sign language they uses which made you disrespectfully interfere in their private conversations is equal in status to spoken languages and it's never a business of the Deaf too to interfere when people without physical disabilities are conversing.

There's no specific delivery processes for Deaf pregnant women so, they are also in need of the attention of the healthcare personnel for safe delivery just as with their abled counterparts. Communication barrier shouldn't be an excuse towards irregularities. As we are still in the trouble, advocating for provision of sign language interpreters at healthcare centres, health care personnel should find mean to interact with the Deaf such as by writing and gesturing or do the best by locating someone who understands their language.

Just has we have those who and do not embrace decency among the people without physical disabilities as we have among the people with physical disabilities, upbringing and personality differs so, indecency can't be generalized.

As a person with proper upbringing even before I became Deaf, I have learnt to respect whom respect is due and at many occasions there has been no reciprocation due to my deafness. Imagine a situation where a boss maintains respectful manner of approach towards those who I senior by age and position while addressing me like a toddler not minding my sensibility.

By not minding people with physical disabilities sensitivity and relating to them like a second hand citizen can cause them to be aggressive. They also have blood running in their veins.

We shouldn't capitalize on anyone's unwelcome attitude, just as we have the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly among the people without physical disabilities as we have among people with disabilities, everything is generalized so, no attitude can be categorized. How we handle situation differs.

But, it would be encouraging to reciprocate respect as we intermingle towards peaceful and fruitful co-existence, we are all humans.
