SHIELDING YOUR DEAF CHILD IS A DISCRIMINATION AGAINST HIS/HER HUMAN RIGHTS
Deafness isn't a disease, it has no cure except with the power of God and its, if He wills.
Do not distract the plans of God for your Deaf child, do not delay his/her destiny by shielding him/her at home, patronizing every nook and cranny in search of miracle which usually amount to a total waste.
By shielding him/her at home, you are merely discriminating against his/her rights to education and social inclusion.
Deafness is a life changing experience and, life goes on.
This is the 15th year of my deafness, i am able to be what i am today because my parents and i accepted fate and in concordant to move on. That doesn't diminish our faith in God for miracle, we believed God is everywhere even in our bedrooms.
Early enrollment at an educational institution will equip him/her towards addressing challenges as with his/her hearing counterparts.
There was this case of a Deaf brother in Lagos who was enrolled at a hearing primary school at the age of 40+ due to prolonged shielding at home, from where do you want such a person to start from, he has no formal or informal training before age 40, no wife nor children at the age of 40.
Give your Deaf child equal training as with his/her hearing counterparts, enroll him/her at a Deaf School early for proper grooming, mind you, you are also to enroll with him/her by acquiring Sign Language skill, this will break barrier of communication and equip you to give your Deaf child proper upbringing.
Another grouch, some parents are fond of following their Deaf children about whenever they are attending a social gathering with their colleagues, at 15, a child is grown enough to moderate and adapt to his environment, by following your Deaf child about like MTN, you are not helping him/her in the area of self-grooming, our eyes are our ears, our eyes needs to be trained so therefore, release him/her to locomote alone to exercise his/her capabilities towards fast adaptation to the communities.
I am admonishing parents of the Deaf to accept the new identity of
your child and encourage the child to accept it also, early
acceptance open door to possibilities, the identity doesn't devalue but
its a value added to livelihood if well utilized by releasing him/her
for grooming.
The new identity shouldn't distract your good-will for your child, God has a purpose for making your child a Deaf, continue grooming him/her as with his/her hearing counterparts, as a living testimony, i assure you a bountiful harvest.
A powerful message from a Deaf Boy - Emery Dean
Emery is a Deaf 11 years old boy. He strongly believes in his opinion that every hearing parent of the Deaf child is required to know how to communicate with their children in Sign Language.
But there are way more essentials than learning Sign Language with their Deaf children only. Every child is entitled to equal access and an equal opportunity to participate. Deaf child needs to be given an equal education, equal opportunities, full language access, and full accessibility. Be sure to allow them curious to learn as much as they want.
It is all about allowing them to learn what is out there and absorb everything to how their think process, which usually leads them to the success path.
Emery wants every Deaf child to receive equal access and an equal opportunity to participate as hearing does.
It doesn't matter if you learn how to communicate in Sign Exact English or American Sign Language as long as you give your child full accessibility and your child is entitled to do whatever he/she wants! That's the key to making them successful in a long run!
